What This Coffee Tastes Like

Vietnam Robusta is a single origin Robusta coffee from Vietnam, produced from large, uniform beans selected for consistency and strength. Known for its high caffeine content and bold character, this coffee is designed for those who prefer power and body over brightness.

This coffee offers a direct, no-nonsense profile that performs especially well in espresso-focused brewing and darker roast styles.

Roast Profile

Medium Roast

Bold and nut-forward with a medium to full body and low acidity. The medium roast highlights chocolate sweetness, roasted nut character, and dried fruit undertones, creating a structured and approachable cup.

This roast works well for filter brewing and espresso, offering strength and body without excessive bitterness.

Dark Roast

Deep and intense with a heavy body and muted acidity. The dark roast emphasises dark cocoa, toasted grain notes, and earthy depth, producing a powerful and grounding cup.

Best suited for espresso and milk-based drinks, this roast delivers weight, crema, and a long, lingering finish.

Espresso Roast

Strong and concentrated with a dense mouthfeel and pronounced bitterness. Roasted specifically for espresso, this profile delivers dark chocolate richness and roasted nut depth with minimal acidity.

Ideal for espresso, moka pot, and milk-based drinks where intensity and structure are the priority.

COFFEE QUESTIONS

Questions, answered

The things people ask us most about this coffee.

Is it good for espresso?

Yes. It is built for espresso, with a heavy body and enough natural oils to pull a thick, lasting crema, and strong dark chocolate and roasted nut character under pressure.

How much caffeine does it have?

Very high. As a Robusta it carries roughly double the caffeine of Arabica, and this is one of our highest-caffeine coffees.

Why does this coffee produce so much crema?

Because it is a Robusta. Robusta beans naturally produce more and thicker crema than Arabica, which is why this coffee gives such a rich, lasting crema in espresso.

What does it taste like?

Bold and rich, with dark chocolate, molasses, and roasted nut over an earthy, smoky base. Very low acidity and a heavy, syrupy body.

Does it work well with milk?

Very well. Its intensity stands up to milk and sugar, so it shines in lattes and Vietnamese-style iced coffee with condensed milk.

Which brew methods suit it best?

Espresso, moka pot, phin filter, and drip machine. It is especially popular for traditional Vietnamese phin brewing.

What is the difference between the medium, dark, and espresso roasts?

Medium is the lightest of the three, bold and nut-forward with chocolate sweetness and a touch of dried fruit. Espresso sits between medium and dark, developed specifically for espresso with a balanced body and a thick crema. Dark is the deepest and most intense, with dark cocoa and earthy depth, best for a powerful cup and milk. All three keep the low acidity and heavy body Robusta is known for.

Which roast should I choose?

Choose medium for a lighter, sweeter, more versatile cup, espresso for a balanced, crema-rich shot developed for the machine, or dark for the boldest, heaviest cup with the most depth.

Is this a good coffee for beginners?

This is one of our boldest, highest-caffeine coffees. If you already enjoy strong, full-bodied cups you will love it; if you prefer something milder, a smooth medium roast is a gentler starting point.

How should I grind my coffee for my brew method?

Choose your grind at checkout, or select whole bean and grind at home. As a guide: fine for espresso, medium for pour over and drip, and coarse for French press.

How fresh is the coffee when it arrives?

We roast weekly in small batches in Ottawa, and your order ships within 3 business days of being placed, so your coffee reaches you soon after its roast for peak flavour.

Should I choose whole bean or ground?

Every coffee is available as whole bean or ground to your brew method. Whole bean stays fresher longer; ground is ready to brew right away.

How should I store my coffee to keep it fresh?

Keep it in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture. Avoid the fridge, and use it within a few weeks of opening for the best flavour.

Can I subscribe and save?

Yes. Choose a subscription at checkout to get fresh coffee delivered on your schedule. You can adjust or cancel anytime per our subscription policy.

Where do you ship, and how much is shipping?

We ship across Canada and to many countries worldwide. Free Standard shipping applies to Canadian orders, starting at $70 in Ontario and Quebec and rising by region up to $85 in the North. Standard rates within Canada start at $6.49. International customers cover shipping and any customs or duties, all shown at checkout.

We came back from a

"We came back from a trip to Vietnam recently and thanks to the large phin filter we got, we got through our souvenir coffee in no time. Thankfully I came across Coffee Roast Lab and their 5lb bag of Vietnam Robusta beans. The order was processed and shipped quickly and the beans arrived fresh soon after. The coffee's nice and strong. We've only made the standard coffee with condensed milk so far, but can't wait to try making all the different coffees we tried there like egg, coconut, and salt coffee!"

Pretty close to what we

"Pretty close to what we might typically drink in Hanoi until, except for the heavy roast in the dark. The roast almost overcomes the natural cocoa notes. Still, we’re glad we found it. We just ran out of the Vietnamese Robusta we brought back from our last 6 month stint. We will order medium roast next time. Hopefully that will do the trick. Really looking forward to that naturally sweet and chocolatey taste of pure Vietnamese Robusta."
