What This Coffee Tastes Like

Sumatra Decaf is a single origin decaffeinated coffee from the Aceh region of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It retains the region’s signature depth and body while offering a caffeine-free option for evening or low-caffeine drinking.

Decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process, this coffee preserves flavour integrity without chemical solvents, delivering a smooth, grounded cup with familiar Sumatran character.

Roast Profile

Medium Roast

Smooth and rounded with a medium body and very low acidity. The medium roast highlights soft cocoa sweetness, earthy depth, and gentle spice, creating a calm and balanced cup.

This roast is well suited for filter brewing and espresso, offering flavour and body without intensity or sharpness.

Dark Roast

Deeper and heavier with a fuller body and muted acidity. The dark roast intensifies cocoa and earthy notes while drawing out warm spice and a slightly smoky undertone.

Ideal for espresso and milk-based drinks, this roast delivers richness and structure while remaining smooth and approachable for a decaffeinated coffee.

COFFEE QUESTIONS

Questions, answered

The things people ask us most about this coffee.

Is this fully decaffeinated?

It is decaffeinated coffee, so it contains only trace amounts of caffeine while keeping its bold flavour.

How is the caffeine removed?

With the Swiss Water Process, a chemical-free, water-based method that removes the caffeine while preserving flavour, leaving only trace amounts behind.

What does it taste like?

Rich, smooth, and bold, with earthy depth, dark chocolate, and tobacco. A very heavy body and very low acidity, unusually full for a decaf.

Which brew methods suit it best?

Espresso, French press, moka pot, and drip machine. In French press, a shorter steep of about 3.5 to 4 minutes keeps it smooth.

Does it make good espresso?

Yes. Its heavy body gives a surprisingly full, low-acid decaf shot with dark cocoa depth, and it is excellent in milk.

What is the difference between the medium and dark roasts?

Medium is smooth and rounded, with soft cocoa sweetness, earthy depth, and gentle spice. Dark is heavier and deeper, with intensified cocoa, earthy notes, warm spice, and a slightly smoky undertone.

Which roast should I choose?

Choose medium for a calm, balanced decaf, or dark for a fuller, richer cup that stands up to milk.

How should I grind my coffee for my brew method?

Choose your grind at checkout, or select whole bean and grind at home. As a guide: fine for espresso, medium for pour over and drip, and coarse for French press.

How fresh is the coffee when it arrives?

We roast weekly in small batches in Ottawa, and your order ships within 3 business days of being placed, so your coffee reaches you soon after its roast for peak flavour.

Should I choose whole bean or ground?

Every coffee is available as whole bean or ground to your brew method. Whole bean stays fresher longer; ground is ready to brew right away.

How should I store my coffee to keep it fresh?

Keep it in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture. Avoid the fridge, and use it within a few weeks of opening for the best flavour.

Can I subscribe and save?

Yes. Choose a subscription at checkout to get fresh coffee delivered on your schedule. You can adjust or cancel anytime per our subscription policy.
